Routing is harder than it looks
There’s something deceptively simple about the idea of “get this thing to that place.” You draw a line, it goes from A to B, done.
But then you start asking questions:
- What happens when B doesn’t exist?
- What if there are seventeen paths to B and you need the fastest one?
- What about C, D, and E that also need to get somewhere?
- And oh—things change. Routes break, new paths appear, the network reshapes itself.
The more I think about it, the more routing feels like one of those problems that looks straightforward until you actually have to build it. Then it becomes a layered beast: decisions at the edge, decisions in the middle, decisions at the destination. Failures at every layer. Recovery strategies. Fallbacks. Timeouts.
Maybe that’s why good routing systems feel almost invisible. The complexity is all in the implementation, hidden behind something that just… works.
